Emerald formation is not one universal recipe
On pp. 51–52, the chapter says emeralds form only when two tectonic plates collide with enough force to create mountains. GIA classifies emerald deposits into multiple geological groups, including hydrothermal/metamorphic and schist-hosted/magmatic-related settings. Even Colombian emeralds such as Chivor involve hydrothermal brines, faults, evaporites and black shales; GIA notes that Colombian emerald formation predates the main Andean uplift phase.
“Crowns of cavemen” has a traceable parallel—but weak archaeological support
According to Chapter 4, the earliest emeralds were found in “crowns of cavemen” and were the only gemstones in those crowns. A strikingly similar claim appears in discussion of Aja Raden’s Stoned, where a Neolithic “caveman crown” made from materials including emeralds is described. That makes the statement part of a recognizable jewelry-history narrative rather than an isolated phrase.
The difficulty is archaeological verification. GIA’s historical survey places documented ancient Egyptian emerald production in the first millennium BCE, with securely documented early emerald jewelry associated with much later ancient cultures. I could not locate a strong archaeological source establishing the sweeping claim that humanity’s earliest emeralds came from prehistoric crowns, much less that emeralds were the only gemstones in them. The appropriate classification is therefore circulating claim, weakly substantiated rather than simply “invented fact.”
Columbus did not find South America in 1492
The Library of Congress describes the 1492 voyage as contact with Caribbean islands. Columbus did not reach the South American mainland until a later voyage. The book’s sentence compresses the broader European encounter with the Americas into a geographically incorrect 1492 claim.
