Historical Inaccuracies & Oddities — Chapter 20: Zimbabwe Becomes Tanzania—and a Buffalo Looks Like a Bison

Chapter 20 may be the most visually satisfying anomaly in the series. The text tells a charging-buffalo discovery story in Tanzania. Campbell Bridges’ own account places that encounter in Zimbabwe in 1961. Later discoveries occurred in Tanzania in 1967 and Kenya in 1970.

The charging buffalo belongs in Zimbabwe

Bridges’ first-person history says he was prospecting in Zimbabwe when an old rogue buffalo charged him into a gully. While continuing up the gully, he encountered the green garnet material that began the tsavorite story.

Tanzania is not the only source

The book later says that this area of Tanzania is still the only place tsavorite has ever been found. Bridges himself documented a Kenyan discovery in 1970, and Kenya became one of the gemstone’s major sources.

The picture appears to be the wrong bovine

The animal illustration beside this part of the chapter shows the high shoulder hump, heavy shaggy forequarters and beard-like hair characteristic of an American bison. An African/Cape buffalo has a very different silhouette, especially the low back and broad sweeping horns with a heavy boss.

This creates three layers of mismatch around one story: location (Zimbabwe → Tanzania), distribution (Tanzania-only despite Kenya), and animal image (African buffalo text beside bison-like art). The concentration is difficult to miss once seen.

High-confidence corrections: the 1961 buffalo episode occurred in Zimbabwe; tsavorite is also found in Kenya. Visual finding: the adjacent drawing is morphologically much closer to American bison than African buffalo.
